Whitaker Auto Repair News for GRAND ISLAND: Overrunning Alternator Pulley System

GRAND ISLAND overrunning style pulley replacement

GRAND ISLAND drivers know that their alternator generates electricity to run the engine, all of the electrical systems, and to recharge the battery. Your serpentine belt spins the alternator to create the of electricity.

Until recently, the alternator was always spinning while the engine was operating. Now some alternators come with overrunning pulleys. There are two layouts of overrunning pulley systems – we won’t make a distinction here, but will simply refer to them as “overrunning style”.

Your serpentine belt winds over and around pulleys linked to the engine accessories, including the alternator. Overrunning style alternator pulleys are able to disconnect from the alternator allowing it to “coast” when the engine is decelerating. This allows the alternator to be at rest some of the time, which, of course, means the alternator will last longer.

Overrunning style alternator pulleys provide additional vibration isolation for smoother engine performance, increased gas mileage and increased belt life. They reduce overall wear of all of the engine accessories.

If overrunning style pulley replacement is necessary, the alternator will be checked. If the alternator is still good, only the pulley needs to be replaced, saving a good chunk of cash.

This type of alternator is swiftly becoming standard equipment on new autos in GRAND ISLAND. The critical benefits of increased fuel efficiency and reduced wear to the overall accessory drive system are compelling.

Your experienced Whitaker Auto Repair technician can help you with all of your starting and charging issues. The expert technicians at Whitaker Auto Repair in GRAND ISLAND can inspect, diagnose and correct alternator, battery, and starting systems.

Whitaker Auto Repair Professional Auto Maintenance: Crash Avoidance Systems

All new cars and light trucks now come with electronic stability control. This crash avoidance system joins others like traction control and anti-lock brakes to help make vehicles safer and better able to assist GRAND ISLAND auto owners to avoid a crash. Some vehicles come equipped with adaptive cruise control that will slow the vehicle when there is slower traffic ahead. Others have lane change sensors that will gently steer the vehicle to stay in its lane. Some vehicles will even apply the brakes if they detect that a crash is imminent. These revolutionary systems utilize computers to analyze data from various sensors around the vehicle. When the computer detects that the auto is unstable or that a crash is possible, the computer will intervene: applying brakes, adjusting steering, disengaging the cruise control, cutting engine power and so on.

Even the more basic, mandated stability control systems can do a lot to help keep your vehicle under control and avoid an accident. These electronic systems are not considered wear items – meaning that there is no routine maintenance required. However, all electronic crash avoidance systems rely on mechanical components that do need to be in good working order.

When a vehicle rolls out the factory door, it has brand new tires, brakes, suspension, shocks and struts and steering components. This means that all of this hardware is in excellent condition – probably the best overall condition it will ever have. Tires will have maximum grip, shocks and struts will provide maximum body control, and brakes will have their best stopping power; for example.

This means two things. First, overall vehicle control is already highly optimized so an event that would trigger a crash avoidance system intervention is less likely. It also means that once a crash avoidance system steps in – it has high-traction tires, effective brakes and strong body to work with to help maintain vehicle control and avoid an impact.

Conversely, worn tires, suspension, shocks and struts, brakes and steering components mean that a crash avoidance intervention is not only more likely, but that the crash avoidance systems have to work more aggressively to help maintain vehicle control.

So, as amazing as crash avoidance systems are, we still need to make sure we are maintaining the important wear items so that they are in the best position to work properly. Replace all vital parts of your crash avoidance system when necessary. These include: worn tires to maintain proper road contact in any weather condition; shocks and struts – in order to maintain designed ride control; Brake pads, shoes, and fluid – keeping your brake system in good working order; and inspecting suspension and steering components.

The crash avoidance system is really a modern marvel for GRAND ISLAND drivers. Give it the tools it needs to do its job by staying on top of the underlying mechanical systems. Ask your Whitaker Auto Repair service specialist if there is anything that should be fixed to keep your crash avoidance system functioning as it was designed to do.

Whitaker Auto Repair Car Care News and Information: Battery Upgrade

auto battery upgrades GRAND ISLAND

Every automobile comes with a battery that meets the car maker’s specifications. This battery does a good job for the conditions under which typical buyers of that particular vehicle are expected to drive.

When it’s time to replace a battery, you should always choose one that at least meets the auto manufacturer’s requirements.

Keep in mind that some of us GRAND ISLAND motorists drive in different ways and under different conditions. These differing conditions may require a battery with more than standard capabilities.

For example, if you use your vehicle to make deliveries around GRAND ISLAND throughout the day (and that includes delivering kids to everywhere they need to be), you’ll be starting your vehicle many times a day. A starting event uses a lot of electricity – and all the short trips don’t allow enough driving time for the alternator to keep the battery at a high level of charge. That is obviously harder on your battery than say, a six mile commute to and from work in Grand Island. If this is the case, a battery with a higher reserve capacity might be beneficial.

As you can imagine, it takes more energy to start a cold engine before the oil warms up and thins out a bit. It follows that if you live in NEBRASKA where it’s very cold part of the year, a battery with a higher cold cranking amps (CCA) rating could help make sure you can start your vehicle every morning.

Heat is the real enemy for GRAND ISLAND car owners’ batteries. Did you know that summer months in NEBRASKA and hotter climates can literally take a year or more off the expected life of your battery? So depending on where you live, purchasing a battery with a longer warranty period may help you manage your replacement rates.

In short, our battery needs vary depending on how we use our autos and the climate in which we live. Come in and talk to your Whitaker Auto Repair tech about what battery is best for you. We can test your battery to verify its power and life expectancy so you can be prepared for the months ahead and decide if a battery upgrade is right for you.

The Whitaker Auto Repair Guide for GRAND ISLAND Drivers: Continuously Variable Transmission

GRAND ISLAND CVT service

Traditional automatic transmissions have a number of gears or “speeds”. As you accelerate, the transmission starts in first gear and runs up through the gears. You hear the engine speed rise and fall as you progress through the gears. When you press down on the gas pedal the transmission may kick down into a lower gear to accelerate or climb a hill, and you hear the engine speed rise.

A Continuously Variable Transmission, or CVT, is a type of automatic transmission. It does not have gears or speeds, but rather its “gearing” infinitely varies up and down depending on your needs. The engine instantly speeds up to the optimal number of revolutions for power and efficiency and stays there while the CVT seamlessly adjusts to reach the speed you desire. CVT’s are very efficient and often deliver better fuel efficiency than their traditional counterparts.

Most hybrid vehicles have a CVT. You may be surprised to learn that there are thousands of vehicles with CVT’s on NEBRASKA roads. In fact, their design is based on Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings and have been used in vehicles since the 1800’s.

The biggest complaint GRAND ISLAND drivers have about CVT’s is that the driving experience is so different than what we are used to with a conventional automatic transmission. When you first press the accelerator the engine quickly revs up to best speed and stays there. That nonstop engine droning can become irritating. Also GRAND ISLAND motorists miss the sensation and sound of moving up through the gears. Some auto makers have programmed the vehicle control computers to simulate gear shifts and may even offer paddle “shift” options to make the CVT more engaging. Of course, that hurts the efficiency and performance the CVT is designed to deliver.

As traditional automatic transmissions are being made with more gears (8 and 9 speeds are readily available), the fuel efficiency and performance gap with CVT’s is closing. CVT’s have far fewer moving parts, produce less heat and are lighter than conventional automatic transmissions. CVT’s are not currently suitable for vehicles that tow and haul heavy loads. Maintenance schedules for CVT’s vary by vehicle manufacturer. They do require a special CVT transmission fluid. Using the incorrect fluid can ruin the CVT – so always use the recommended fluid. Talk to your Whitaker Auto Repair technician if you are not sure.

Modern CVT’s are very efficient, durable and deliver a satisfying driving experience for Grand Island car owners. If you have a auto with a CVT, or are considering purchasing one, know that Whitaker Auto Repair can help you follow the factory recommended maintenance for the transmission along with your other maintenance and repair needs.

Whitaker Auto Repair Auto Care and Car Repair: Multi-Point Inspection

multi-point inspection GRAND ISLAND

In a perfect world we GRAND ISLAND car owners would get into our automobiles in the morning and go about our business with no traffic on smooth roads. All the lights would be green, the air would be pure and a gallon of gas would cost a buck. In that world, following vehicle manufacturer vehicle maintenance recommendations might be all you would need to worry about.

But of course – that’s not the way it works. There’s dust and pollution in Grand Island air, traffic jams and potholes. Issues with your car don’t come on a schedule – they just happen. That’s why Whitaker Auto Repair offers multi-point vehicle inspections.

Our well-trained and experienced service specialists know what to look for and often uncover both minor and major issues for busy GRAND ISLAND motorists.

There may be 3,000 miles to go before you’re scheduled for a new air filter – but if it’s clogged up now we’ll find out and fix it. If our technician observes an uneven tire wear pattern, they can investigate the root cause. You may not even remember that curb you hit two months ago that bent your tie rod end, but damage was done and a trained eye can see the effects.

The multi-point inspection gives us an opportunity to inspect for the unexpected. We can help take care of little troubles before they become costly. Your car will perform better, be more efficient and safer. This is all part of the service and care we incorporate into our standard Whitaker Auto Repair procedures.
